Best Practice - Valid HTML and XML
When you're deciding on an outsourced website provider, ask them if the pages they build are Valid HTML. If they say yes, ask them for a sample, and check out the validation yourself.
Whilst you're at it, why not ask them how they build their websites? Do they code the pages by hand, or do they use an HTML building front-end like Macromedia Dreamweaver or Fireworks.
Although you may have heard about these products, you might not know what they're used for and why. Products like Dreamweaver and Fireworks allow developers with no basic knowledge of the HTML language to build a website in a graphical-based-way, this is great when you want to build your very first website, but not for creating commercial and enterprise level websites.
Whilst you're at it, why not validate this page's HTML, if you're feeling particularly keen, you can even validate the CSS too.
Who or what has written your code, and why's it so slow?
The reason programs like this shouldn't been use for commercial websites is simple, 'Code Optimisation'. Programs like Dreamweaver create the HTML used for the page, rather than the code being hand written by the programmer.
Althought this may speed up the process of creating pages, the result is a site massively over-engineered. When you've got 50,000 visitors a month, your code needs to be as clean as possible otherwise your site will appear slow to the end user.
